Krka National Park Boat: Skradin Transfers and Visovac

The transfer that every first visit uses is a park operation, not a tour: boats leave the dock in Skradin's little harbour, ride 20-25 minutes past the fortress walls and up the widening ria, and land at the top of Skradinski buk where the boardwalk loop begins. The official price list states the inclusion plainly — visitor transport by boat on the Skradin-Skradinski buk-Skradin route, available from 1 April to 31 October — a scenic cruise bundled into an entry fee that costs €40 at peak and €7 in the winter bands. The same window governs the Lozovac shuttle on the other side of the barrier, which explains the winter arithmetic: between 1 November and 31 March neither vehicle runs, the visit starts on foot from the Lozovac gate, and on 1 January Lozovac is the only entrance open at all.

The ferry's rhythm follows the park's hours: boats start near opening and run to the published closing hour — 20:00 in July and August — so the day's last visitors still get the crossing. There is no way to buy the crossing alone: the park sells no ferry-only ticket, and boarding at Skradin requires valid park entry, which is the honest answer to the boat-only question. Between the falls and the upstream barriers the river widens into a lake, and the island in its middle carries one of Dalmatia's most photographed silhouettes: Visovac, a limestone islet edged with cypress and topped by the monastery and the Church of Our Lady of Grace. The continuity is the story — Franciscans have kept the island since 1445, when they withdrew ahead of the Ottoman advance, and the present monastery and church were built in 1576 on that foundation. The museum holds an archaeological collection, historic church vestments and vessels, and a library with incunabula among its volumes.

The excursion boat delivers a 30-minute guided stop — enough for the church, the museum rooms and the terrace view back down the water, with the guide's narration carrying the history the short visit cannot. It is a working monastery rather than a set piece, and the stop is structured rather than free-roaming: visitors move with the guide, on the island's terms, for the half hour the schedule allows. The shot most people come for is the classic frame of the island floating in its lake, taken from the boat approach or the terrace; the window seat on the run through the Među greda canyon delivers the second-best image of the trip.

The official 2026 excursion menu runs six scheduled routes, all priced as add-ons to the entrance ticket and all inside the 1 April-31 October season, with March and November as weather-permitted extras the park may grant. The anchor product is the 2-hour round trip from Skradinski buk to Visovac at €15 for adults and €10 for children aged 4-18, with the 30-minute island stop built in. The grand loop takes 4 hours: Visovac for 30 minutes, the canyon cruise between the barriers, and a 90-minute stop at Roški slap with its mill row and the Ogrlice necklaces, for €20 adult and €15 child. From the Roški slipway the 2-hour Visovac round trip mirrors the falls departure at €15, and the shortest crossings run from the Stinice and Remetić landings — 35 minutes door to door including the island stop, at €10 adult and €7 child. Under-4s ride free; groups of 20 or more book 24 hours ahead at reduced rates.

The structural point: every one of these prices adds to a valid entrance ticket, not instead of one. The park also charters vessels by the boat for private groups, priced in the hundreds of euros and quoted on request — the only genuine boat-without-entry arrangement, and a group product rather than a walk-up one. For most visitors the decision is narrower: the 2-hour island trip or the 4-hour pairing, and the answer depends on whether Roški slap's 90 minutes fits the day.

The boats reward an early start and punish a late one. The first ferry leaves Skradin near opening, and the first hour on the barrier belongs to whoever crossed on it — the boards are empty, the mills are the loudest thing in the park, and the loop's 1.5-2 hours finish before the coach wave lands. The Visovac excursion then slots into the middle of the day: the 2-hour trip out of the falls area fits the early-afternoon trough, and the island stop gives the legs the rest the morning's walking earned. Travellers on the 4-hour loop should treat it as the day's main event rather than an add-on — 90 minutes at Roški slap plus the canyon cruise leaves room for the buk loop only if the day starts early, and the last boats back to Skradin run to the published closing hour with no slack after it.

Two seasonal caveats close the planning. First, the whole system is seasonal: from 1 November to 31 March the ferry, the shuttle, the excursion fleet and Roški slap itself all pause, so a winter visit is a footpath visit from Lozovac and a lake seen from the bank. Second, the excursion calendar flexes at the margins — March and November sailings run only when weather allows, at the park's discretion, so shoulder-season travellers should confirm the day's departures at the Skradin ticket office.
