Roški Slap: the Necklace Barrier, the Mills and the Boat

The park calls the barrier's opening section the Ogrlice — the necklaces — a long chain of small travertine steps where the water spreads into dozens of thin curtains instead of one big fall. The whole barrier is 650 metres long and 25.5 metres high from first step to last, but almost none of that height is vertical: the drop accumulates over the necklace section and then concentrates at the barrier's end, where the river gathers itself and crashes funnel-like into Visovac lake, the 7-kilometre stretch that carries the monastery island. Mosses build the travertine here in beards, caves, ledges and cones.

The buildings are half the visit. A row of renovated watermills (mlinice) lines the bank, joined by a stupa — a fulling mill for washing and thickening wool cloth — and a valjavica for the same trade; together they are the park's best-preserved monument to the river's pre-tourism economy, and you can walk into them. A small run-of-river hydroelectric plant was added to the right bank in 1910, and above the site opens Oziđana pećina, a cave holding the oldest traces of human life in this part of the park. The walking trail crosses the Ogrlice on timber walkways — the photograph of the trip is taken from the middle of the necklaces, looking back at the mill row.

The locality opens 1 April and closes 31 October, running 10:00-18:00 with extended hours in July and August; from November to March the site is shut and the only way to see the necklaces is from the excursion boats that do not run either. Flow is the second variable: like every barrier on the river proper, the necklace curtains thin in late summer as the hydro plants upstream take their share, while spring and autumn rain rebuild them. Late afternoon is the site's best hour — the excursion boats have gone, the coach groups from the main barrier have thinned, and the low sun lights the necklaces from behind the mill row.

The honest planning note: almost nobody comes here as a sole destination, and the arithmetic agrees. The site needs 1-1.5 hours; the drive from the main barrier's gates is roughly half an hour; the boat product takes four. The site therefore slots naturally as the second stop of a combined day — road visitors pair it with Manojlovac slap and the canyon backroads, boat visitors pair it with Visovac.
